Abilities Unlimited, Inc. is an Adult Day Program serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our program provides individualized support, behavioral services, community integration, life-skills development, and health and hygiene assistance in a safe, respectful, and person-centered environment.
We are seeking a compassionate, dependable, and professional Certified Nursing Assistant/Health Support Specialist to support the personal-care, hygiene, and routine health-related needs of our program participants.
Position Summary
The Certified Nursing Assistant will provide personal-care assistance, support routine health and safety procedures, and help participants become more comfortable with common healthcare equipment and activities.
The CNA will work closely with program management, direct-support staff, families, behavioral professionals, and other authorized healthcare professionals. All duties must be performed in accordance with the employee’s training, certification, written participant plans, company policies, and applicable California requirements.
The selected employee will be required to complete California Direct Support Professional training and any additional program-specific competency training.
Primary Responsibilities
Assist participants with diaper changes and incontinence care.
Assist participants with bathing, showering, grooming, dressing, and personal hygiene.
Maintain each participant’s privacy, dignity, comfort, and safety during personal-care services.
Follow infection-control procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
Clean and disinfect personal-care areas and equipment after use.
Observe participants for visible signs of illness, injury, discomfort, or changes in condition.
Promptly report health or safety concerns to program management and other authorized persons.
Measure and document basic vital signs when permitted, trained, assigned, and authorized by program policy.
Implement approved healthcare-tolerance and desensitization plans developed by qualified professionals.
Help participants gradually become comfortable with blood-pressure cuffs, otoscopes, thermometers, pulse oximeters, and other routine healthcare equipment.
Use positive reinforcement, gradual exposure, and person-centered support strategies.
Stop or modify activities when a participant shows significant distress, in accordance with the participant’s written plan.
Document participation, responses, progress, refusals, and concerns accurately.
Assist participants with the self-administration of medications only when legally permitted and after completing all required training and competency verification.
Follow written medication orders, participant plans, program procedures, and documentation requirements when assisting with self-administration.
Immediately report medication errors, refusals, reactions, discrepancies, or other concerns.
Never independently change a medication, dosage, schedule, route, or physician’s order.
Provide basic first aid and obtain additional assistance during emergencies.
Complete incident reports and other required documentation.
Maintain participant confidentiality and protect private health information.
Work cooperatively with Job Coaches, Direct Support Professionals, behavioral staff, administrators, families, service coordinators, and healthcare professionals.
Participate in staff meetings, required training, emergency drills, and participant-planning meetings.
Perform other duties that are permitted by the employee’s certification, training, and assigned role.
Required Qualifications
Current California Certified Nursing Assistant certification in active and good standing.
Must be at least 18 years old.
Current CPR and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain certification within the required period.
Willingness to complete California Direct Support Professional training.
Willingness to complete employer-provided medication-assistance training and competency verification.
Experience or willingness to assist adults with diaper changes, incontinence care, bathing, showering, and hygiene.
Ability to protect participant dignity, privacy, rights, and confidentiality.
Ability to follow written healthcare, behavioral, and service plans.
Ability to document services accurately and legibly.
Ability to remain calm and professional during behavioral, personal-care, or health-related situations.
Must pass all required criminal-background clearances.
Must complete required health screening and tuberculosis clearance.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
Experience in an Adult Day Program, residential facility, behavioral program, school, nursing facility, or community-based setting.
Experience providing incontinence care, bathing, showering, and hygiene assistance.
Experience taking basic vital signs.
Experience supporting individuals with sensory sensitivities, medical anxiety, or resistance to healthcare procedures.
Experience implementing written behavior-support or tolerance-building plans.
Familiarity with mandated-reporting, infection-control, and medication-documentation procedures.
