Nurse Licensure & Compact States

Understanding the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) and how it affects where you can work.

The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC)

The NLC allows registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPN/LVNs) who hold a multistate license in their home state to practice in other NLC member states without obtaining an additional license. As of 2025, 41 states and territories are NLC members.

To hold a multistate license you must declare your primary state of residence as an NLC state and meet that state's licensure requirements. If you live in a non-compact state you must obtain a single-state license for each state where you intend to work.

License Application Tips for Travelers

  • Apply for high-demand state licenses before you need them — many take 4–12 weeks to process.
  • Keep your license verification documents (Nursys print, CEU records) in a single folder for fast agency submissions.
  • Consider applying for CA and NY licenses early — they are single-state but cover the two largest job markets.
  • Renewal reminders: set calendar alerts 90 days before expiry to avoid a lapse that would delay your next contract start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything healthcare professionals ask us before their first assignment.

How long does it take to get a new state nursing license?

Processing times vary from 2 weeks (many NLC compact states with endorsement) to 10–14 weeks (California, which has its own process and high volume). Apply for licenses in high-demand states before you actively need them to avoid missing assignment opportunities.

Can I work in multiple states with one license?

If your primary residence is in a Nurse Licensure Compact state, your multistate license covers all 41 current NLC member states. If your home state is not in the compact (e.g., California, New York), you must apply for individual endorsement licenses in each state where you plan to work.
