Shift & Schedule
- Day Shift – 5 days a week, 8-hour shifts
- Hours: 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Requirements & Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse
- Proficiency in Epic charting system (required)
- Travel experience within healthcare settings (required)
- Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Radiation Oncology certification (required)
- Expertise in oncologic emergencies, including:
- Acute Tumor Lysis Syndrome (ATLS)
- Hemorrhage management
- Increased intracranial pressure management
- Spinal cord compression response
- Psychosocial care, including understanding and implementing advanced directives
- Symptom management proficiency in:
- Alteration in skin and mucous membranes
- Altered mental status
- Constipation and diarrhea
- Dysphagia
- Nausea and vomiting
- Neuropathy
- Nutritional status evaluation and support
- Medication management skills:
- Administration of antiemetics
- Monitoring medication side effects
- Opioid administration (required)
- Professional knowledge including:
- Calling in prescriptions
- Implementation of isolation precautions and proper use of PPE
- Timely notification of physicians regarding changes in patient status
- Radiation therapy expertise:
- External Beam Radiation Therapy (Teletherapy) (required)
- Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) (required)
- Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) (required)
- Palliative Radiation Therapy (required)
- Adherence to radiation safety precautions
- Wound care management
- Comprehensive patient assessment skills, including:
- Fatigue and energy level evaluation
- Height and weight measurement
- Oral cavity assessment
- Skin integrity and wound assessment
- Experience working in inpatient oncology and radiation oncology settings (required); outpatient oncology experience preferred
- Chemotherapy management:
- Oral administration of chemotherapy (required)
- Recognition and communication of abnormal lab values
- Additional clinical skill: suctioning
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing radiation oncology treatment, ensuring comfort, safety, and symptom management throughout therapy.
- Administer and monitor oral chemotherapy and supportive medications, carefully managing side effects and patient responses.
- Perform detailed assessments, including monitoring skin integrity, nutritional status, neurological symptoms, and lab results.
- Manage oncologic emergencies effectively with prompt intervention per protocol.
- Utilize Epic charting system accurately to document patient care and progress.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including physicians, radiation therapists, and social workers, to coordinate patient-centered care.
- Educate patients and families about treatment plans, symptom management, and advanced directives.
- Adhere strictly to radiation safety standards and isolation precautions to protect patients, staff, and self.
- Maintain clear communication channels with prescribing physicians for timely medication management and clinical updates.
- Support psychosocial aspects of care, helping address patients’ emotional and social needs related to diagnosis and treatment.
Qualifications
- Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS), Radiation Oncology certification is mandatory.
- Minimum 3 years of nursing experience with demonstrated expertise in oncology and radiation therapy nursing.
- Experience and comfort in inpatient oncology and radiation oncology settings.
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills, with the ability to manage complex symptomology and emergencies.
- Proficient use of electronic health records (Epic preferred).
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, facilitating collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to adhere to strict safety protocols related to radiation and infection control.
