Registered Nurse – Labor and Delivery Unit (Night Shift)

Shift & Schedule
- Night Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Requirements & Skills
- Minimum 1 year of nursing experience; previous charge nurse experience preferred
- Charting experience required with Epic electronic health record system
- Teaching hospital experience preferred
- Certifications required: ACLS, AWHONN Advanced, AWHONN Intermediate, NRP
- Comprehensive IV therapy and phlebotomy skills, including:
- Administration of blood and blood products
- Drawing venous blood
- Starting and maintaining IV access
- Use and monitoring of infusion pumps and drips
- Labor and delivery management competencies, including:
- Amnioinfusion administration
- Assisting with high risk and vaginal deliveries
- Circulating and recovering C-section patients
- Scrubbing for Cesarean sections
- Sterile vaginal examinations
- Experience across antepartum, labor & delivery, mother/baby care settings
- Medications administration experience, including:
- Antihypertensives, insulin drips, magnesium sulfate therapy
- Pitocin (oxytocin), terbutaline
- Neonatal care skills, such as:
- APGAR scoring
- Baby nurse responsibilities (“Baby Catcher” role)
- Collecting cord samples and newborn ID/security banding
- Neonatal resuscitation and thermoregulation management
- Newborn care competencies including:
- Assisting with circumcision and post-op assessment
- Cord care and newborn hypoglycemia management
- Discharge teaching for new parents
- Ensuring thermoregulation
- Antepartum care and procedures, including:
- Sterile speculum and vaginal exams
- Non-Stress Tests (NST)
- Reflex and edema assessments
- Triage of obstetrical patients
- Use of External Fetal Heart Monitoring (EFM)
- Postpartum care management addressing:
- Bladder distension and multiple birth care
- Cesarean section recovery
- Couplet care and postpartum hemorrhage
- Pregnancy-induced hypertension and vaginal delivery care
- Postpartum procedures including:
- Breastfeeding and lactation support
- Episiotomy and incisional care
- Foley catheter management
- Fundus, lochia, perineum monitoring
- Operation of electric/manual breast pumps
- Wound assessment and care
- Competence in surgical cases such as cervical cerclage and D&C procedures
- Pain management skills including:
- Epidural anesthesia support
- General anesthesia and nitrous oxide administration
- Pain assessment and management
- Expertise in infection control including isolation precautions and PPE use
- Vaccine administration capabilities
- Care for patients with:
- Multiple gestations
- Pre-eclampsia / eclampsia
- Premature rupture of membranes
- Preterm labor
- VBAC management and trial of labor
- Advanced fetal monitoring skills:
- Recognition and treatment of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns
- Use of both external and internal fetal monitoring, including IUPC placement and calibration
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert nursing care to antepartum, laboring, and postpartum patients in a fast-paced Labor and Delivery unit.
- Collaborate closely with the interdisciplinary team to manage high-risk maternal and neonatal conditions, ensuring the highest safety standards.
- Utilize advanced fetal monitoring to assess and respond promptly to changes in fetal and maternal status.
- Support mothers and families throughout labor, delivery, and postpartum care, including patient education and breastfeeding support.
- Perform and assist with specialized procedures including C-sections, vaginal deliveries, neonatal resuscitation, and surgical cases.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation using the Epic charting system in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
- Adhere strictly to infection control practices and participate in ongoing education and quality improvement initiatives.
- Serve as a resource and mentor to new staff and participate in unit charge responsibilities when applicable.
Qualifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing
- Certified in ACLS, AWHONN Advanced and Intermediate maternal-newborn nursing, and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
- Proven experience in Labor and Delivery nursing with expertise in both maternal and neonatal care
- Proficient with Epic electronic medical records system
- Strong critical thinking, clinical judgment, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
- Flexibility and resilience to provide care during night shifts
Compensation & Benefits
