Assistant Nurse Manager – Night Shift

Chemical Detox UnitAbout the Unit

Our Chemical Detox Unit is a ASAM 4.0 level of care detox program with a maximum capacity of 15 patients with an average of 9-10 patients. The unit is staffed each shift with an RN, LVN, and 1–2 CNAs, providing a team-based approach to patient care in a structured detox environment.We are seeking an experienced and dependable Assistant Nurse Manager (RN) to support the leadership and day-to-day operations of our night shift team. This position works closely with the Nurse Manager and serves as a key clinical and leadership resource for staff.The schedule offers flexibility and may typically be structured as a 5/80 schedule or four 10-hour shifts between the hours of 7:00PM-7:30AM. Because this is a night-shift leadership position, the Assistant Nurse Manager is also expected to maintain reasonable availability by phone outside of scheduled work hours to support night-shift staff when questions, staffing concerns, or urgent unit needs arise.

Key Responsibilities

Provide clinical leadership, guidance, and support to nursing staff during night shift.

Serve as the primary nursing leadership resource for night-shift staff when clinical, operational, staffing, or patient-care questions arise.

Maintain availability by phone outside of regularly scheduled hours to provide guidance and support to night-shift staff as needed.

Assist with maintaining smooth day-to-day operations of the detox unit and help troubleshoot issues that arise during night shift.

Support staffing needs and assist with securing coverage for unexpected call-offs.

When appropriate RN coverage cannot be secured, the Assistant Nurse Manager may be expected to provide direct RN coverage to maintain safe staffing and continuity of patient care.

Assist the Nurse Manager with development and maintenance of the nursing schedule.

Facilitate monthly night-shift communication meetings to review unit updates, address staff concerns, improve communication, and identify opportunities for improvement.

Assist with incident follow-up, including reviewing events, identifying contributing factors, and helping ensure appropriate follow-up is completed.

Complete and assist with chart audits and compliance monitoring to support documentation standards, regulatory requirements, and quality patient care.

Provide employee coaching, feedback, and ongoing support to help staff meet clinical and departmental expectations.

Assist the Nurse Manager with performance improvement efforts, including identifying trends, developing solutions, and following up on areas requiring improvement.

Help communicate policy, procedure, workflow, and operational updates to night-shift staff.

Assist with staff onboarding, training, education, and ongoing competency development.

Help identify and address workflow, staffing, patient-safety, and communication concerns.

Promote effective communication and collaboration between night shift, day shift, nursing leadership, and other departments.

Support quality improvement and patient-safety initiatives within the department.

Serve as a positive and approachable leadership presence while promoting teamwork, accountability, and staff engagement.

Qualifications

Current RN license in good standing.

At least two years of nursing experience strongly preferred, with acute care, detox/substance use treatment, behavioral health, or psychiatric nursing experience highly desirable.

Previous charge nurse, lead nurse, or nursing leadership experience preferred.

Strong clinical judgment, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work independently and provide leadership and clinical support during night shift.

Ability to remain accessible and responsive to staff when leadership support is needed outside of regularly scheduled hours.

Comfortable remaining clinically involved and providing direct patient care when needed.

Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate is an experienced RN who enjoys both leadership and hands-on clinical nursing. We are looking for someone who is approachable, dependable, organized, clinically confident, and comfortable being a consistent resource for the night-shift team.This individual should be able to problem-solve independently, provide guidance when issues arise after hours, communicate effectively with nursing leadership, and step in to support the unit when necessary. The goal of this position is to ensure the night-shift team has consistent leadership, support, and accountability even when the Nurse Manager is not physically on site.

Pay: $54.00 - $61.00 per hour
