Description
American Traveler is seeking a Registered Nurse for a Progressive Care Unit/Telemetry position requiring an active SD or compact RN license and at least 1-1.5 years of PCU/tele experience.

Details

56-bed Progressive Care Unit within a hospital setting

Cares for adults with diagnoses including CHF, ARF, hepatitis, ESLD, DM, DKA, pneumonia, sepsis, GI bleed, syncope, chest pain, pulmonary emboli, respiratory failure, COPD, arrhythmias, seizure disorders, overdose, and delirium tremens

RN patient ratio of 1:4 on PCU/Tele

12-hour day shifts, 36 hours per week

Weekend rotation required, working every other or 50% of weekends (Friday-Sunday) per 4-week schedule

Every other holiday coverage required at minimum during the contract

No scheduled on-call hours, though low census on-call may apply if hours exceed guaranteed weekly hours

Eligible to float to Med Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, ICU (experience dependent), and Observation units within scope of practice

Floating occurs in rotation with other travelers

Unit supported by 24/7 charge nurses, phlebotomy for peripheral draws, resource/flex RN, respiratory therapy, and in-house hospitalists

Centralized tele monitoring available 24/7 for rhythm reading and alarm notifications

Uses Epic EMR (preferred), Alaris pumps, and Omnicell

Mandatory huddles before shift start at 0625 and 1825 in the 7th floor conference room

Requirements

Active RN license (South Dakota or Compact) required

BLS and ACLS certifications required

Minimum 1 year of PCU or Tele RN experience required; candidates with less than 1.5 years require manager approval

First-time travelers considered if they have more than 2 years of overall RN experience

Completion of an accredited nursing education program required

Skilled in cardiac rhythm interpretation, IV starts, blood product administration, CIWA protocol, drain/tube management, catheter insertion and management, continuous bladder irrigation, and chest tube maintenance

Experience with cardiac and vasoactive drip titration preferred (Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Levophed, and occasionally Betablockers or antihypertensives); training available if not previously performed

Strong clinical judgment, physical assessment skills, and professional communication required

Comfortable working in a team nursing model alongside LPNs, with possible task-sharing due to scope differences

Epic EMR experience preferred

Additional Information

Responsibilities include comprehensive patient assessments, medication administration, drip titration, and coordination with the care team

May be asked to precept nursing students during the assignment

Monthly audits are conducted for pre/post pain scoring, requiring 90% compliance

Scrub color requirement: Navy Blue for RNs

Orientation includes 2 days of in-class/online education followed by two 12-hour preceptor shifts

Free parking available on site

Must reside more than 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible; no local travelers accepted

Previous permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning as a traveler

Up to 7 days of requested time off allowed, with contract extension required to maintain a full 13-week work commitment

No time off approved during the first three weeks of August due to the Sturgis Bike Rally

Facility is known for being traveler-friendly with high renewal rates for travel staff
