About This Position
Position Description:
The Academic Remediation Specialist is a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) who coordinates, delivers, monitors, and documents structured remediation and student-success services for Vocational Nursing students with academic, clinical, skills-competency, or professional-conduct concerns. Working collaboratively with students, instructors, and the Director of Nursing, the Specialist supports implementation of individualized Student Success Plans, promotes safe nursing practice and student accountability, and ensures remediation activities and records align with Summit College policy and California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) requirements. On site position. Regular Reliable Attendance. Teaching as needed.
Essential Functions:
Receive and review instructor referrals and copies of individualized Student Success Plans for students who meet remediation criteria under the VN Remediation and Student Success Policy.
Coordinate remediation activities and assist each referred student with implementing the interventions, responsibilities, measurable goals, expected outcomes, and timelines established in the Student Success Plan.
Conduct remediation and student-success meetings at the intervals defined in each plan; assess learning needs and barriers and reinforce student accountability and self-reflection.
Provide individualized and group tutoring, guided content review, study-strategy coaching, learning-style support, test-taking strategies, and study planning for academic deficiencies.
Support students with incomplete homework, low ATI engagement, quiz or examination scores below 80%, course averages below 78%, ATI Content Mastery scores below Level 2, or difficulty applying theoretical concepts, as referred by faculty.
Collaborate with nursing faculty to align tutoring and remediation materials with course objectives and the BVNPT-approved curriculum.
Coordinate and provide skills-lab practice, repeat skills check-offs, faculty-guided return demonstrations, medication-calculation review, and simulation-based competency reinforcement.
Conduct structured simulation scenarios that reinforce critical thinking, clinical judgment, safe practice, communication, and technical skills in a controlled environment.
Provide or coordinate focused support for clinical concerns, including case-study analysis, documentation practice, safety and communication coaching, and other activities identified by the clinical instructor and Student Success Plan.
Provide or coordinate professional-conduct remediation, including reflective activities, professionalism and communication coaching, behavioral-expectations review, and time-management or organizational support.
Assess and document student performance during remediation sessions and provide timely, constructive feedback tied to the objectives of the Student Success Plan.
Monitor student progress and completion at the defined intervals in the plan and identify recurring or unresolved academic, clinical, skills, safety, or professional-conduct concerns.
Provide the referring instructor with documented weekly updates regarding attendance, activities completed, outcomes, improvement, and continued concerns.
Collaborate with the instructor to evaluate whether plan objectives were met and whether the student demonstrated competency, improved performance, and safe practice; recommend continuation, revision, or additional remediation when indicated.
When a student does not meet Student Success Plan objectives, promptly elevate the concern by scheduling a meeting with the student, instructor, and Director of Nursing.
Maintain complete remediation records for each case, including the referral form, Student Success Plan, session attendance logs, skills check-off sheets, progress notes, communications, and final evaluation and outcome.
Track student outcomes in the LMS/SIS and maintain student files in accordance with BVNPT, ACCET, Summit College, and institutional recordkeeping requirements.
Gather, interpret, and communicate ATI assessment and engagement results to guide remediation planning, strengthen NCLEX preparation, identify at-risk students early, and support continuous program improvement.
Work closely with theory, skills-laboratory, simulation, and clinical instructors; participate in student-progression meetings and communicate remediation outcomes to faculty and the Director of Nursing.
Promote a supportive, equitable, and non-punitive remediation culture while helping students navigate academic challenges and access appropriate student-success resources.
Provide training and support for instructors on simulation-based teaching and remediation methods consistent with BVNPT standards and program objectives.
Assist in evaluating and updating remediation policies, procedures, forms, and resources to maintain alignment with Section 23, BVNPT requirements, and institutional standards.
Participate in departmental meetings, workshops, professional development, and advisory board activities to remain current with best practices and support program quality.
Facilitate Term 4 exit procedures by assisting students with required forms and referrals for Financial Aid, graduation clearance, Live Scan, and the NCLEX contract process.
Provide substitute coverage as needed and perform other duties assigned by the Director of Nursing.
Licensure/Education/ Work Experience Requirements:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
Current RN license in the State of California.
Demonstrated proficiency with ATI software, curriculum alignment, and analytics to track student outcomes, identify risk factors, and support BVNPT compliance.
BLS certification required; additional certifications (e.g., ACLS, PALS) preferred.
Minimum of three (3) years of clinical nursing experience required.
Previous experience in nursing education, tutoring, or clinical instruction preferred.
Strong knowledge of BVNPT standards and nursing curricula.
Proficiency with simulation equipment and clinical skills training tools.
Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and collaborate with faculty and staff.
Pay: $50.00 - $60.00 per hour
