The Operating Room Nurse is a Registered Nurse who is knowledgeable in preoperative theory and practice, who provides for and directs the nursing care of patients within the operating room. Responsible for the supervision of paraprofessional personnel by performing the following duties:
1. Utilizes the nursing process to establish and provide for patients needs in a perioperative setting. 2. Performs and implements the preoperative checklist. 3. Implements nursing care in the intraoperative phase. 4. Coordinates nursing interventions with the other members of the surgical team, including the Surgeon, Anesthesiologist, and other personnel. 5. Provides for the psychological needs of the patient and acts as the patient advocate. 6. Supervises and assists paraprofessionals in room. 7. Assists Surgeons and Anesthesiologists as necessary. 8. Completes Intraoperative Nursing Record. 9. Ensures that acceptable standards of patient care are followed. 10. Maintains sterile field, initiating corrective action when breaks in the technique occur. 11. Provides necessary equipment and supplies to all members of the surgical team. 12. Performs and records sponge and needle counts. 13. Monitors the physiologic status of the patient during local cases. 14. Monitors the environment, including temperature, humidity, and noise level. 15. Ensures a safe environment, including maintenance of safety straps, electrosurgical grounding, and maintenance of equipment. 16. Provides for patient confidentiality and privacy. 17. Accompanies the patient to the recovery room and gives an oral report concerning the patient's condition and operative procedure. 18. Assists with cleanup of room between procedures and the end of the schedule. 19. Restocks and replaces supplies used. 20. Assists in admitting patients. 21. Assists in recovery room. 22. Participates in preoperative interviews. 23. Observes and enforces cost containment practices with effective utilization of time and materials. 24. Shares and performs assigned duties necessary for operations, including ordering supplies and performing equipment checks. 25. Attends staff meetings and in-services. 26. Follows medical/legal policies at all times. 27. Maintains and upgrades standards of performance and education. 28. Maintains a neat and clean appearance.
Qualifications: At least two years of perioperative experience, preferably in orthopedic surgery. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints, both verbally and in writing. Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
Math Ability: Ability to comprehend and apply principles of basic mathematics; addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions.
Education/Experience: Associate Degree (A.A. / A.S.) or Bachelor’s Degree (B.A. / B.S.) and a Diploma in Nursing from an accredited nursing program. Minimum two (2) years nursing experience, preferably in a surgical setting.
Certificates and Licenses: California Registered Nurse License ACLS, BCLS, PALS certifications Membership in a professional organization (i.e. AORN or PANAC) preferred
Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (50 lbs. and over); or Carrying (15-44 pounds); Pulling; Pushing; Reaching above Shoulder; Walking; Standing; Repeated bending; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
