About This Position
Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Registered Nurse specializing in Labor & Delivery to join our dynamic healthcare team for a four-week assignment. This role involves providing expert nursing care to women during labor, delivery, and postpartum periods, ensuring the safety and comfort of both mother and newborn. The ideal candidate will demonstrate proficiency in obstetric nursing practices, possess excellent patient assessment skills, and be committed to delivering exceptional maternal care within a fast-paced hospital environment. Responsibilities
Monitor and assess laboring patients’ vital signs, fetal heart rates, and progress, utilizing advanced clinical skills.
Administer medications, including pain management interventions such as epidurals and other analgesics, following established protocols.
Assist with labor support techniques, including patient positioning, comfort measures, and non-pharmacologic pain relief.
Prepare delivery rooms with sterile techniques, ensuring all equipment is ready for safe labor and delivery procedures.
Support obstetric emergencies by responding promptly to complications such as fetal distress or postpartum hemorrhage.
Perform neonatal assessments immediately after birth, including Apgar scoring and initial stabilization procedures.
Collaborate with obstetricians, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate comprehensive patient care.
Document all nursing interventions accurately within electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic or Cerner.
Educate patients on postpartum care, breastfeeding techniques, and newborn care practices.
Maintain strict adherence to infection control protocols and HIPAA regulations to ensure patient safety and confidentiality.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing maternal and neonatal outcomes.
Demonstrate proficiency in advanced nursing procedures such as suturing, IV infusion management, catheter care, and sterile technique.
Requirements
Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license with current state licensure in good standing.
Minimum of two years of recent Labor & Delivery nursing experience in a hospital setting; experience in Level I or Level II trauma centers preferred.
Demonstrated expertise in obstetric procedures including labor support, cesarean section assistance, suturing, and neonatal resuscitation.
Proficiency with electronic medical records systems such as Epic or Cerner; familiarity with EMR/EHR documentation standards.
Knowledge of fetal monitoring equipment and interpretation of fetal heart rate tracings.
Strong understanding of obstetric pharmacology including medication administration for labor pain management.
Experience with emergency response protocols related to obstetric complications.
Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team while maintaining a compassionate approach to patient care.
Excellent communication skills for patient education and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Certifications required include Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), and appropriate state-specific RN licensure.
Additional skills such as trauma medicine knowledge, infection control practices, medical terminology expertise, and familiarity with ICD coding are advantageous.
