How nursing differentials work

A shift differential is extra pay for working hours other people do not want. In nursing it comes in three common shapes: a flat dollar amount per hour for nights, another for weekends, and a multiplier of base pay for holidays. They stack — a Saturday night shift usually earns both the night and the weekend differential — which is why the effective rate can run 12% or more above base without any single differential looking large.

Flat dollars, not percentages

Most differentials are quoted in dollars per hour rather than as a percentage, and that detail matters more than it sounds. A $5/hour night differential is worth 20% to a nurse on $25 base and 10% to one on $50. When you move to a higher-paying facility, a differential that looked generous can quietly become a smaller share of your pay. Compare differentials as a percentage of your own base rate, not against each other.

What differentials do to overtime

Under federal law, overtime is calculated on the regular rate of pay, which includes shift differentials — not the base rate alone. Employers get this wrong routinely. If you worked differential hours in a week where you also earned overtime, your overtime should be based on the blended rate, and it is worth checking your cheque against that.

The tax bite

Differential pay is ordinary taxable wages. There is no special treatment, and because it sits on top of your base pay it is taxed at your marginal rate rather than your average one — which is why $156 of weekly premium becomes $122 in your account. Travellers sometimes assume differentials can be routed into stipends; they cannot. Stipends reimburse living expenses and are unrelated to which hours you work.

Worth negotiating

Differentials are often more negotiable than base rate, because they do not reset the facility's pay scale. If you are already working nights, asking for the night differential to be raised is frequently an easier conversation than asking for a higher hourly — and on a full-time night rotation it is worth more per year than a modest bump to base.

Common questions

What is a typical night shift differential for nurses?

Commonly a flat few dollars per hour rather than a percentage, with weekend differentials usually smaller than night ones and holidays paid as a multiplier of base. Because they stack, a nurse working nights and weekends can end up 15-25% above base without any single differential looking large.

Do shift differentials count towards overtime?

Yes. Federal law calculates overtime on the regular rate of pay, which includes shift differentials — not the base rate alone. Employers get this wrong routinely, so it is worth checking your cheque when you have worked both differential hours and overtime in the same week.

Are shift differentials taxed differently?

No. Differential pay is ordinary taxable wages with no special treatment. Because it sits on top of your base pay it is effectively taxed at your marginal rate rather than your average one, which is why the after-tax uplift is smaller than the gross premium.

Can shift differentials be paid as a tax-free stipend?

No. Stipends reimburse duplicated living expenses and are unrelated to which hours you work. Any attempt to reclassify differential pay as a stipend would not survive scrutiny, and the exposure is yours as well as the agency’s.

Is it worth negotiating the differential instead of the base rate?

Often, yes. Differentials do not reset a facility’s pay scale, so raising one is frequently an easier conversation than raising base pay. On a full-time night rotation, a modest increase to the night differential can be worth more per year than a small bump to base.

Sources & limits

Night and weekend differentials are treated as flat additions to the base hourly rate; holiday pay is treated as a multiplier of base, with only the portion above base counted as premium. The resulting effective rate is then taxed by the shared engine using published 2026 federal, FICA and Texas tables, so the after-tax figure reflects your marginal rate. Hours that qualify for more than one differential should be entered in each category.
