Taxed vs Tax-Free Pay Calculator
Compare the same package paid as wages against a stipend split.
Compare the same package two ways
Both columns below pay exactly $2,400 a week gross. The only difference is how that money is labelled on the contract.
Same gross, two labels
| Line | Stipend split | All taxable | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taxable wages | $1,260.00 | $2,400.00 | — |
| Non-taxable stipends | $1,140.00 | $0.00 | — |
| − Federal income tax | $105.78 | $344.04 | -$238.26 |
| − Social Security | $78.12 | $148.80 | -$70.68 |
| − Medicare | $18.27 | $34.80 | -$16.53 |
| Weekly take-home | $2,197.83 | $1,872.36 | +$325.47 |
Reported W-2 wages under the stipend split are $60,480 a year against $115,200 if the whole package is paid as wages. That gap is the real trade-off — see below.
Why the same money nets differently
A stipend is a reimbursement, not wages. If you qualify for it, it carries no federal income tax, no state income tax and no FICA. Pay the identical amount as an hourly rate instead and all three apply. That is the whole mechanism, and on a typical package it is worth $4,231 across a 13-week contract.
The FICA part is the piece people forget. Employee Social Security and Medicare come to 7.65% of wages with no deduction or allowance to soften them — the first dollar is taxed the same as the last. Shifting money into a qualifying stipend removes that 7.65% entirely, on top of whatever income tax it saves. It is why two agencies quoting the same weekly total can be several hundred dollars apart in what actually lands.
What the split costs you
Lower reported wages are not free. Mortgage underwriters look at W-2 income, and stipends frequently do not count towards it. Social Security benefits are calculated from your reported earnings history, so years of heavily stipend-weighted contracts reduce what you eventually draw. Unemployment and state disability benefits are usually based on reported wages too, as are many employer retirement matches. A package that is 90% stipend maximises this week's cheque and quietly costs you elsewhere.
The qualification test
None of this applies unless you maintain a tax home and duplicate your living expenses on assignment. That means genuine, ongoing costs at a permanent residence you return to — rent or a mortgage you keep paying while away, not a room at a relative's house. If you cannot show it, the IRS reclassifies every stipend dollar as wages, and it can do so years later. In that case the two columns above collapse into one: you have the taxable package, whatever the contract called it.
Reading an offer
Ask for the taxable hourly rate and the stipend amounts separately. A recruiter who will only quote a blended weekly figure is not necessarily hiding anything, but you cannot compare two offers without the split. Watch for stipends that are prorated when you miss a shift — a single cancelled shift on a stipend-heavy package costs far more than the hourly loss suggests, because you lose a slice of the untaxed portion too.
Common questions
Is it better to take a higher hourly rate or bigger stipends?
For weekly take-home, bigger stipends win — they avoid income tax and the 7.65% employee FICA entirely when you qualify. But they also lower your reported W-2 wages, which affects mortgage applications, Social Security credits, unemployment and disability benefits, and often overtime rates. A stipend-heavy package maximises this week and costs you elsewhere.
How much more do stipends actually net?
On a typical package split roughly half and half, the stipend version nets a few hundred dollars a week more than the identical gross paid entirely as wages. Enter your own numbers above for the exact figure — the gap widens as more of the package moves into stipends.
Do stipends affect my overtime rate?
Yes, and unfavourably. Overtime is calculated on your taxable hourly rate, not the blended rate. On a stipend-weighted package, time and a half is one and a half times a deliberately small number, so heavy overtime is worth more on a taxable-heavy contract.
Will a stipend package hurt my mortgage application?
It can. Underwriters look at W-2 income, and stipends often do not count towards qualifying income, or count only with a two-year history. If you are planning to buy, ask your lender how they treat travel stipends before you sign a stipend-heavy contract.
What happens if I do not qualify for tax-free stipends?
The two columns collapse into one. Without a tax home and duplicated living expenses, the IRS treats every stipend dollar as taxable wages — retroactively if necessary — so you end up with the all-taxable outcome regardless of what the contract called it.
Do stipends reduce my Social Security benefits?
Indirectly, yes. Social Security benefits are calculated from your reported earnings history. Years of heavily stipend-weighted contracts report lower wages, which lowers the average the benefit is based on. For most travellers the effect is small, but it is real and it compounds.
Sources & limits
Both columns are computed by the same engine from published 2026 federal, FICA and Texas tables, as annual liability on the work state, divided back to a weekly figure. The all-taxable column holds the weekly gross constant and converts the entire package to an hourly rate of $66.67 over 36 hours.
