Responsibilities
- Provide labor and delivery nursing care, including assistance with high-risk delivery and support for vaginal delivery
- Assist with sterile vaginal exams, including effacement, dilation, station, and presentation
- Circulate and support C-section workflow, including scrub and recovery care as assigned
- Support delivery interventions such as forceps/vacuum extraction and manage hemorrhage/shock situations
- Perform antepartum testing and monitoring, including NST (Non Stress Tests) and OCT (Oxytocin Challenge Tests)
- Utilize and monitor EFM (External Fetal Heart Monitoring), and triage obstetrical patients
- Support procedures and assessments such as reflex checks/edema assessment/clonus and sterile speculum exams
- Administer and monitor medications and therapies used in obstetric care, including anticoagulation therapy, antihypertensives, antiseizure therapy, insulin drips, magnesium sulfate therapy, Pitocin (oxytocin), prostaglandins, and terbutaline
- Provide neonatal care in the delivery room, including APGAR support, neonatal resuscitation, and thermoregulation with radiant warmers/thermoregulation
- Handle ID/Security Banding and newborn identification procedures
- Provide postpartum care, including couplet care, management of postpartum hemorrhage, bladder distension care, postpartum hemorrhage, and pregnancy-induced hypertension/vaginal delivery support
- Support postpartum care procedures such as breastfeeding/lactation support, episiotomy/incisional care, Foley catheter insertion/management, fundus/lochia/perineum care, electric/manual breast pump use, and wound assessment/care
- Support ongoing patient care across common maternal diagnoses and presentations (e.g., asthma, cardiac disease, COVID, diabetes mellitus, HELLP syndrome, HIV, infectious disease, malpresentations, multiple gestation, placenta previa/abruption, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, PROM, preterm labor, RH incompatibilities, seizure disorder, substance abuse, uterine rupture, and VBAC management/trial of labor)
- Participate in cardiac monitoring and emergency response, including adult cardiac arrest, infant/neonatal arrest, and use of rapid response/code teams
- Provide IV therapy and related care, including phlebotomy (drawing venous blood) and starting/maintaining IVs using infusion pumps/drips/IV monitoring
- Maintain central lines (CVC / PICC) and support blood & blood product administration
- Support care during postpartum and surgical/advanced procedures as assigned, including cervical cerclage, D&C, and tubal ligation
- Deliver newborn care including cord care, newborn assessment, newborn hypoglycemia monitoring support, and discharge teaching to parents
Requirements
- 2 years of experience
- Patient ratio experience: 1:2
- Epic charting system experience: Required
- Travel experience: Not required (with L&D experience—can function independently)
- Certifications required: ACLS, AWHONN Intermediate, BLS, FHM, NRP
