About the Role
As a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Nurse (PICU RN), you'll be responsible for delivering the highest level of nursing care to critically ill or post-surgical pediatric patients. You'll continuously monitor breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, neurological status, and other vital indicators while managing complex treatment plans and advanced life-support therapies.
This role requires exceptional clinical judgment, strong pediatric critical care knowledge, compassion, and the ability to remain calm and focused in high-acuity situations.
Key Responsibilities
Provide advanced nursing care for critically ill infants, children, and adolescents in the PICU
Perform comprehensive patient assessments and ongoing evaluations
Monitor cardiac rhythms, respiratory status, blood pressure, and other critical physiological indicators
Administer medications, IV therapies, blood products, and specialized pediatric treatments
Manage ventilators and other critical care equipment
Collaborate with physicians, pediatric specialists, respiratory therapists, and interdisciplinary care teams
Assist with invasive procedures and emergency interventions when needed
Document patient care accurately using electronic medical record (EMR/EHR) systems
Educate and support families regarding treatment plans, procedures, and recovery expectations
Maintain compliance with patient safety, infection prevention, and hospital quality standards
Minimum Qualifications
Active Registered Nurse (RN) license
Minimum of 2 years of recent PICU or pediatric critical care experience preferred
Current BLS certification
Current ACLS and/or PALS certification as required by facility
Strong pediatric assessment and critical care nursing skills
Ability to thrive in fast-paced, high-acuity healthcare environments
