Description
American Traveler is hiring a Registered Nurse for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) role requiring SD or compact RN licensure and at least 1 year of PCU-specific experience.
Details
44-bed mixed acuity Progressive Care Unit including Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and MedSurg patients
Patient population includes direct admits, ED admits, post cath lab, MI, NSTEMI/STEMI, CHF, dysrhythmia management, pacemaker malfunction, and epicardial pacers
Serves as backup stroke unit and medical overflow
Step-down level care for post cardiac/vascular, post-cardiac cath, post open heart surgery, post TAVR, post EP studies, and post pacemaker insertion patients
RN to patient ratio typically 1:4, sometimes 1:3 depending on acuity
CNA support at 1:5-8 ratio depending on shift
Tele tech oversees cardiac monitoring with RN confirming strips at 6a and 6p
Peripheral blood draws performed by phlebotomy
RT support available 24/7; hospitalist in facility 24/7 but not unit-dedicated
Uses Epic EMR, Alaris pumps, and Omnicell
Floating primarily to sister General PCU unit, with possible floating to MS/Tele or ICU for PCU-level patients
12-hour day and night shifts, 0700-1900 or 1900-0700
Weekend rotation every other weekend
No on-call requirements
Requirements
Active RN license (South Dakota or Compact) required
Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
Completion of an approved nursing education program required
Minimum 1.5 years general nursing experience with at least 1 year specific to PCU
Experience with cardiac procedural recovery (CABG/TAVR/post cardiac cath), MI pharmacology, and titratable cardiac/vasoactive drips (Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Levo, Dopamine) required, or manager approval needed if lacking
Experience with heparin drips, cardiac rhythm interpretation, and chest tube management required
TNK administration experience preferred
Epic EMR experience preferred; manager approval required if lacking
Additional Information
Provide step-down level cardiac and vascular nursing care within a mixed acuity unit
May be expected to precept students
Holiday coverage required every other holiday
Orientation includes 2 partial days of education and 3 twelve-hour shifts on the unit
Time off approval allowed up to 7 days, with full week requests requiring extension; no time off permitted during the first three weeks of August annually due to the Sturgis Bike Rally
Scheduled at least two days off after a night shift before being assigned a day shift
Navy blue scrubs required
Free parking provided
First-time travelers considered only with 2+ years of experience
Travelers must live 100 miles or more from any Monument Health facility
Permanent staff must wait one full year before returning as a traveler
