Requirements

• RN Experience: 2 years of RN experience. If less than 2 years, but has Level 4 NICU experience, candidates may be screened.
• Patient Ratio Experience: 1:2–3
• Charting System: Required — Epic
• Community Hospital Experience: Required
• Travel Experience: Required. Can screen if 2+ years NICU experience; do not screen for less.
• Certifications: BLS and NRP Advanced. Will allow NRP if willing to get advanced prior to start (required).
• Required NICU Skill/Clinical Experience: Therapeutic hypothermia (cooling blanket) (required)
• Required Respiratory Experience: Vapotherm (required) and Chest tube management (required)
• Required Respiratory Medication Experience: Nitric Oxide (Ino) (required)
• Required Medication Experience: Administration of conscious sedation (required)
• Required Work Settings/Patient Care Experience: Attend high risk deliveries (required), Mother/Baby (required), NICU III, and NICU IV (required)
• Required GI Experience: Gastroschisis/Omphalocele (required)
• Required Endocrine/Metabolic Experience: Insulin administration (required)
• Additional Skills: Manage PICC lines

Responsibilities

• Provide expert NICU nursing care for neonates across a range of gestational ages, including < 24–28 weeks and 29–34 weeks, as well as > 34 weeks.
• Deliver evidence-based care for high-acuity conditions, including respiratory failure and infectious disease precautions (isolation/PPE, neonatal sepsis workup).
• Monitor and manage hemodynamic status using telemetry on the unit and support invasive hemodynamic monitoring as needed.
• Perform and support IV therapies including starting/maintaining IVs, arterial line management, central line/implanted line care, and central line blood draws.
• Support medication administration and neonatal emergency care, including IV vasopressors, anti-seizure medications, antibiotics/antivirals, and neonatal dosage calculations.
• Perform or assist with advanced procedures and therapies, including APGAR scoring, developmental care interventions, therapeutic hypothermia (cooling blanket), and assistance with lumbar puncture.
• Provide family/patient teaching, including breastfeeding support and handling expressed breast milk.
• Document care accurately in Epic.

• IV Therapy & Access: administration of blood & blood products (required), arterial line management, central line blood draw, central line/implanted line care, starting/maintaining IVs, UAC (umbilical arterial catheter), UVC (umbilical vein catheter)
• Medications & Emergency Meds: anti-seizure medications, antibiotics/antivirals, conscious sedation (required), IV vasopressors, neonatal dosage calculations, steroids, surfactants
• Professional Topics: APGAR scoring, developmental care, patient/family teaching, phlebotomy, thermoregulation
• Neurologic: assist with lumbar puncture, neonatal abstinence syndrome, seizure disorders, therapeutic hypothermia (cooling blanket) (required)
• Work Setting & Care Environments: community hospital, level 1 nursery, mother/baby (required), NICU III, NICU IV (required), attend high risk deliveries (required)
• Endocrine/Metabolic: blood glucose monitoring, hyperbilirubinemia, insulin administration (required), phototherapy
• Gastrointestinal: feedings (bottle, breast, gavage), breastfeeding support/handling breast milk, gastroschisis/omphalocele (required), NEC, placement/management of oral/nasogastric/nasojejunal tubes
• Respiratory: Bubble CPAP, HFNC, high frequency ventilation, management of chest tubes (required), meconium aspiration, nitric oxide (INo) (required), oscillators, oxygen delivery systems, suctioning (ETT/NT), vapotherm (required), ventilator management (AC/PC/SIMV/CPAP/BIPAP/PEEP)
• Cardiovascular: dysrhythmia interpretation/management, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, telemetry on the unit
• Infectious Disease: isolation precautions/PPE, neonatal sepsis, sepsis workup
• Additional: manage PICC lines
