Medical Surgical experience required

First-time travelers accepted
BLS and ACLS certifications required

Level II Trauma Center experience preferred
Experience with acute care surgery and emergency general surgery preferred
Experience with IV therapy and phlebotomy
Experience with central lines and PICC lines
Experience administering blood products
Experience with wound care and wound vacs
Experience with respiratory care, including BiPAP/CPAP and oxygen administration
Post-operative experience preferred
MS/Tele experience preferred
Orthopedic and neurological patient care experience preferred
Compact RN license must be in hand at submission
Travel experience is not required
Job Description
The Medical Surgical Registered Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to adult and geriatric patients in an acute care hospital setting. The RN is responsible for assessing patients, administering medications and treatments, monitoring patient conditions, coordinating care, and collaborating with physicians and other healthcare professionals.
This position is part of a new acute care surgery, trauma, and emergency general surgery unit that will also care for medical-surgical overflow patients.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Medical Surgical RN is expected to provide safe, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care according to established hospital protocols. Specific duties may include but are not limited to:
Assess patient conditions and develop and implement individualized nursing care plans.
Provide care to adult and geriatric patients in a Medical Surgical/acute care environment.
Care for patients with acute care surgery, emergency general surgery, trauma, and medical-surgical conditions.
Administer medications and treatments safely and accurately.
Monitor patients and recognize changes in condition requiring intervention.
Perform IV therapy, peripheral line care, and IV starts.
Manage PICC lines and central lines and perform central-line blood draws.
Administer blood products according to established protocols.
Provide wound care and manage wound vacs.
Provide respiratory care, including oxygen administration, nasal cannula, HFNC, BiPAP, and CPAP management.
Provide care for patients with chest tubes and surgical drains.
Provide colostomy/ileostomy and feeding tube care.
Monitor cardiac status and respond appropriately to emergencies.
Utilize Rapid Response and Code Teams when necessary.
Administer medications including insulin and other prescribed therapies.
Follow isolation precautions and appropriate PPE requirements.
Assist with post-operative patient care.
Maintain accurate and timely patient documentation in Epic.
Collaborate with physicians, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, IV teams, and other healthcare professionals.
Educate patients and families regarding treatment plans, medications, and ongoing care.
Maintain professional conduct and protect patient confidentiality.
Follow all department, hospital, and client facility policies and procedures.
Maintain consistent attendance to meet patient and facility needs.
Working Conditions
The Medical Surgical RN works in a fast-paced Short-Term Acute Care hospital and Level II Trauma Center environment.
The position involves caring for adult and geriatric patients with acute care surgery, emergency general surgery, trauma, and medical-surgical conditions. The RN may encounter infectious or communicable diseases, blood and bodily fluids, and other healthcare-related environmental conditions.
The role requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods and may involve bending, reaching, lifting, repositioning patients, and assisting with patient transfers.
The RN must be able to work effectively in a high-volume clinical environment, maintain attention to detail, recognize changes in patient condition, and communicate effectively with patients, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
Additional Requirements
Patient ratio is approximately 1:5.
Weekend coverage is required — approximately 6 shifts in a 6-week period.
No on-call requirement.
Floating between acute care/Medical Surgical units may be required.
Travelers may be expected to float between nearby sister facilities when required.
Block scheduling is not available.
Locals within 50 miles are accepted at a lower rate.
Compact RN license must be in hand at submission.
All RTO and specific scheduling requests must be submitted upfront.
RTO requests of more than 7 days may require client approval.
Candidates must commit to working 3 of 5 holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, or New Year's Day.
Two references covering at least 1 year of experience within the last 3 years are required during the compliance process.
Candidates must disclose any previous employment or assignments with Providence facilities.
Only one Providence facility may be submitted at a time.
Candidates should not contact the facility directly unless an interview has been arranged through the recruiting team.
Modules are completed before the start date and during orientation.
Flu vaccine requirements are determined by the facility.
COVID-19 vaccination is not required.
