Responsibilities
- Perform grossing and fixation procedures involving additive fixatives; cell component preservation indications and contraindications; coagulant and non-coagulant fixatives; core biopsies; curettings; decalcification; excision specimens; frozen section/tissues (required); immunohistochemistry; incisional biopsies; shave biopsies; and smears and squash preparations.
- Complete embedding and microtomy using automated and manual microtomes, including cutting tissue sections with a microtome and cryostat, cutting blocks, embedding GI specimens, large specimens, smalls and bigs, skin specimens, and embedding molds.
- Perform microtomy involving gelatin and adhesive media, histology cassettes, fatty tissue, frozen sections, hard tissue, paraffin wax sections, precision microtomy, and removing foreign objects as allowed by protocol.
- Process tissue using an automatic tissue processor, including calcified and decalcified tissue, clearing and types of agents, dehydration and types of agents, GI processing schedules, and microwave processing.
- Perform staining procedures using basic dye stains; carbohydrate and amyloid stains; connective and muscle stains; cytoplasmic stains; differentiation; Giemsa and all formulations; hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stain; nuclear stains; periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stain; special stains; and immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining.
- Identify artifacts, prepare frozen sections, mount sections on glass slides, prepare slides for staining, and complete coverslip mounting procedures.
- Perform required Thin Prep and 24 Hour Urine procedures in a hospital clinical laboratory setting.
Requirements
- ASCP-HT certification required.
- Demonstrated proficiency with frozen section/tissues, Thin Prep, and 24 Hour Urine procedures.

Education Requirements
Associate's Degree in Science required.
Experience
- At least 2 years of experience required.
- Teaching hospital experience preferred.
- Travel experience is not required. Candidates without travel experience may be considered with strong experience and more than 10 years of experience.
