Requirements
- Experience: 3 years of RN experience
- Charge experience: Previous Charge Experience (preferred)
- Patient ratio experience: Experience with 1:2 patient ratios
- Charting system: Required — Epic
- LTAC experience: Required
- Travel experience: Required (X2 days floor orientation)
- Certifications (required): ACLS, AWHONN Advanced, BLS, C-EFM
- Certification flexibility: AWHONN Advanced may be taken in lieu of per requirements listed; NRP can be taken in lieu as indicated
- Additional required skill: Interpret dysrhythmias (required)
Responsibilities
- Provide RN-level care across Labor & Delivery and related units, including antepartum, LDRP, mother/baby, and level I nursery support as assigned.
- Deliver safe care using EFM (External Fetal Heart Monitoring) and triage obstetrical patients (required).
- Support labor management, including high-risk antepartum, assisting with vaginal delivery, and working in the OR for C-sections (scrub/circulate as assigned).
- Perform and assist with obstetric procedures such as sterile vaginal exams and sterile speculum exam components.
- Manage emergency and high-acuity situations, including adult cardiac arrest and infant/neonatal arrest.
- Provide neonatal support in the delivery room (including neonatal resuscitation) and assist with newborn assessments and care tasks.
- Support postpartum care activities, including breastfeeding support/lactation support and routine postpartum nursing responsibilities.
Clinical Skills & Training Areas
- IV therapy/Phlebotomy: Start/maintain IVs, use infusion pumps/drips/IV monitoring, draw venous blood, administer blood & blood products, maintain central lines (CVC/PICC).
- Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Care: Interpret dysrhythmias (required); respond to adult and infant/neonatal arrest scenarios.
- Labor & Delivery Management: Amnioinfusion, assist with high-risk delivery, assist with vaginal delivery, circulate for C-section, forceps/vacuum extraction, hemorrhage/shock support, recover C-section, scrub for C-section, sterile vaginal exam.
- Work Settings Experience: Antepartum, community level experience, facility births/month 200–300, high-risk antepartum, Labor & Delivery, LDRP, Level I Nursery, low risk, mother/baby.
- Medication & Administration: Anticoagulation therapy, antihypertensives, antiseizure medications, insulin drips, magnesium sulfate therapy, Pitocin/oxytocin, prostaglandins, terbutaline.
- Neonatal Care in Delivery Room: APGAR scores, “Baby Catcher” responsibilities, cord samples, ID/security banding, neonatal resuscitation, radiant warmers/thermoregulation.
- Newborn Care: Assist with circumcision/assess site post-op (required), cord care, discharge teaching to parents, infant identification, metabolic screen, neonatal abstinence syndrome, newborn assessment, newborn hypoglycemia, phototherapy, teach circumcision care to parents, thermoregulation.
- Antepartum Care & Procedures: Sterile speculum exam (effacement/dilation/station/presentation), NST (Non Stress Tests), OCT (Oxytocin Challenge Tests), reflex checks/edema assessment/clonus, sterile vaginal exam, triage of obstetrical patients (required), use of EFM.
- Patient Conditions: Asthma, cardiac disease, COVID, diabetes mellitus, HELLP syndrome, HIV, infectious disease, malpresentations (breech/face/brow), multiple gestation, neurological disease, placenta previa/abruptio, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, premature rupture of membranes, preterm labor, RH incompatibilities, seizure disorder, substance abuse, uterine rupture, VBAC management/trial of labor.
- Postpartum Care & Procedures: Baby friendly protocols, breastfeeding support/lactation support, episiotomy/incisional care, Foley catheter insertion/management, and fundus care/monitoring.
