About the Role

MedOp Solutions is seeking an experienced Neuro ICU Registered Nurse for a 12-hour night-shift travel assignment at a large acute care hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

This 27-bed Neuro ICU cares for a complex neurological and critical care population, including stroke, neurosurgical, seizure, and medical ICU overflow patients. Candidates must have at least 4 years of ICU nursing experience and be proficient in ventilator management, invasive monitoring, vasoactive and sedation drips, and other critical care skills.

First-time travelers are accepted.

Average daily census: approximately 25 patients

High-acuity neurological and general critical care population

Significant neuro-intensive care cases are primarily assigned to core staff

Strong emphasis on evidence-based nursing practice and teamwork

Patient Ratios

Standard ICU assignments: 1:1–2

Mixed-acuity assignments may be up to 1:3

Key Responsibilities

Provide comprehensive critical care nursing to Neuro ICU patients

Perform detailed neurological and critical care assessments

Recognize and respond rapidly to changes in neurological and hemodynamic status

Care for mechanically ventilated and tracheostomy patients

Manage arterial and central lines

Administer and titrate vasopressors and sedation infusions

Perform central line blood draws

Monitor patients following stroke interventions and neurological procedures

Interpret bedside telemetry and other critical care monitoring

Collaborate with intensivists, advanced practice providers, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams

Maintain accurate and timely documentation in EPIC

Float to appropriate critical care and inpatient areas based on hospital needs

Required

Minimum 4 years of ICU nursing experience

Current BLS

Current ACLS

Current NIHSS

EPIC experience required

Mechanical ventilator management

Tracheostomy management

Arterial line management

Vasopressor titration and management

Sedation management

Central line care and blood draws

Strong critical care assessment and clinical response skills

Preferred

CVVH/CRRT experience

External Ventricular Drain (EVD) experience

Neurocritical care experience

Support Staff

The Neuro ICU provides extensive clinical support, including:

CNA support at approximately 1:8–10

Charge RN who rarely carries a patient assignment

Two Critical Care NPs on day shift

Intensivist coverage 24/7

Two intensivists on days

One intensivist on nights

Hospitalist coverage 24/7

Respiratory Therapy available 24/7

Phlebotomy support for peripheral blood draws

Floating Requirements

Travelers must be comfortable floating based on hospital staffing and patient care needs.

Potential assignments include:

ED Holding/Boarding: 1:3–4

Other ICUs, including:

Medical Respiratory ICU (MRICU)

Surgical ICU (SICU)

Cardiac ICU (CICU)

Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU)

Medical-Surgical: approximately 1:3

PACU Surge: approximately 1:3–4

Sitter assignments

Flexibility with floating is required for this position.

Orientation

New Employee Orientation (NEO)

One full unit orientation shift

Scheduling & Expectations

36 hours per week

12-hour night shifts: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM

Every other weekend required

Every other holiday required

No on-call

Schedules are created in 6-week increments

Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved

SimpliFi Clinical Interviewing: Yes, with final manager review

Fatigue Policy

All staff, including travelers, must follow the facility's fatigue policy:

Maximum of 60 working hours per week

No more than five consecutive 12-hour shifts
