About This Position
Join our team as a Registered Nurse specializing in Labor and Delivery in Eureka, CA. This 13-week night contract offers 3x12-hour shifts from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., 36 guaranteed hours per week, and the opportunity to support patients and newborns across a broad range of obstetric care needs.

Responsibilities
Provide safe, compassionate nursing care throughout labor, delivery, antepartum, postpartum, and newborn care. Support vaginal and cesarean deliveries, collaborate with the interdisciplinary care team, monitor patients and newborns, provide education, and document care accurately in Epic.
Requirements
Current ACLS, AWHONN Intermediate, BLS, and NRP certifications are required. Candidates must demonstrate the following Labor and Delivery competencies:
- IV therapy and phlebotomy: Administration of blood and blood products; drawing venous blood; maintaining central lines, including CVC and PICC; starting and maintaining IVs; and using infusion pumps, drips, and IV monitoring.
- Labor and delivery management: Amnioinfusion; assisting with high-risk and vaginal deliveries; circulating for C-sections; forceps/vacuum extraction; hemorrhage/shock care; recovering C-sections; and performing sterile vaginal exams.
- Work settings: Antepartum, Labor & Delivery, LDRP, and Mother/Baby; experience in a setting with more than 300 births per month; and high-risk antepartum care.
- Medication administration: Anticoagulation therapy, antihypertensives, antiseizure medications, insulin drips, magnesium sulfate therapy, Pitocin/oxytocin, prostaglandins, and terbutaline.
- Neonatal care in the delivery room: APGAR scoring; serving as the baby nurse or “baby catcher”; collecting cord samples; ID/security banding; and using radiant warmers and thermoregulation practices.
- Antepartum care and procedures: Assisting with amniocentesis; assisting with sterile speculum exams for effacement, dilation, station, and presentation; NSTs; OCTs; reflex checks, edema assessment, and clonus assessment; sterile vaginal exams; triage of obstetrical patients; and use of EFM for external fetal heart monitoring.
- Newborn care: Assisting with circumcision and assessing the site post-operatively; car seat education; cord care; discharge teaching for parents; infant identification; metabolic screening; neonatal abstinence syndrome care; newborn assessment; newborn hypoglycemia care; phototherapy; teaching circumcision care to parents; and thermoregulation.
- Postpartum care and procedures: Baby-friendly protocols; breastfeeding and lactation support; Foley catheter insertion and management; fundus, lochia, and perineum care; and wound assessment and care.
- Surgical procedures: Cervical cerclage and D&C.
- Postpartum care: Care for patients following cesarean section and vaginal delivery, including couplet care, multiple births, postpartum hemorrhage, and pregnancy-induced hypertension.
- Pain management: Epidural anesthesia; general anesthesia; IV conscious sedation; nitrous oxide; pain assessment and management; and use of IV PCA.
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency care: Interpretation of dysrhythmias.
- Professional practice: Isolation precautions and appropriate PPE.
