Responsibilities
Provide safe, compassionate nursing care to neonatal patients, monitor clinical status, administer ordered therapies, collaborate with the interdisciplinary care team, educate patients’ families, and document care accurately in the electronic health record.
Requirements
- Certifications: BLS and NRP Advanced
- Patient ratio experience: 1:2–4
- Travel experience is not required
- IV therapy: administration of blood and blood products; arterial line management; central line blood draw; central line and implanted line care; starting and maintaining IVs; UAC (umbilical artery catheter); UVC (umbilical vein catheter)
- Medications and emergency medications: anti-seizure medications; antibiotics and antivirals; IV vasopressors; neonatal dosage calculations; steroids; surfactants
- Professional topics and skills: APGAR scoring; developmental care; patient and family teaching; phlebotomy; thermoregulation
- Neurologic care: assist with lumbar puncture; ICP monitoring; neonatal abstinence syndrome; seizure disorders; therapeutic hypothermia using a cooling blanket; ventricular peritoneal (VP) shunts
- Endocrine and metabolic care: blood glucose monitoring; hyperbilirubinemia; insulin administration; phototherapy
- Gastrointestinal care: breastfeeding support and handling of breast milk; colostomy and ileostomy management and care; bottle, breast, and gavage feedings; gastroschisis and omphalocele; necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC); placement and management of oral, nasogastric, and nasojejunal tubes; post-abdominal surgery care
- Respiratory care: Bubble CPAP; high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC); high-frequency ventilation; chest tube management; meconium aspiration; nitric oxide (iNO); oscillators; oxygen delivery systems; respiratory distress syndrome; ETT and NT suctioning; tracheostomy care and management; ventilator management using AC, PC, SIMV, CPAP, BiPAP, and PEEP
- Cardiovascular care: invasive hemodynamic monitoring (required); telemetry and on-unit monitoring
- Infectious disease care: isolation precautions and PPE; neonatal sepsis; sepsis workup
- Work settings: Level 1 Nursery, NICU II, NICU III, and NICU IV (required)
- Patient populations: neonates under 24–28 weeks (required); neonates over 34 weeks; neonates 29–34 weeks
