Responsibilities
Provide safe, compassionate nursing care for neonates in a specialized NICU setting. Collaborate with the care team, monitor patient status, administer ordered therapies, support families, document care in Epic, and respond to changing neonatal needs.
Requirements
- Certifications: BLS and Advanced NRP
- IV therapy: Administration of blood and blood products; arterial line management; central line blood draws; central line and implanted line care; starting and maintaining IVs; UAC (umbilical artery catheter); UVC (umbilical vein catheter)
- Medications and emergency medications: Anti-seizure medications; antibiotics and antivirals; IV vasopressors; neonatal dosage calculations; steroids; surfactants
- Professional topics and skills: APGAR scoring; developmental care; patient and family teaching; phlebotomy; thermoregulation
- Neurologic care: Assist with lumbar puncture; ICP monitoring; neonatal abstinence syndrome; seizure disorders; therapeutic hypothermia (cooling blanket); ventricular peritoneal (VP) shunts
- Endocrine and metabolic care: Blood glucose monitoring; hyperbilirubinemia; insulin administration; phototherapy
- Gastrointestinal care: Breastfeeding support and handling of breast milk; colostomy and ileostomy management and care; bottle, breast, and gavage feedings; gastroschisis and omphalocele; necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC); placement and management of oral, nasogastric, and nasojejunal tubes; post-abdominal surgery care
- Respiratory care: Bubble CPAP; high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC); high-frequency ventilation; chest tube management; meconium aspiration; nitric oxide (iNO); oscillators; oxygen delivery systems; respiratory distress syndrome; ETT and nasotracheal suctioning; tracheostomy care and management; ventilator management using AC, PC, SIMV, CPAP, BiPAP, and PEEP
- Cardiovascular care: Invasive hemodynamic monitoring is required; telemetry and on-unit monitoring
- Infectious disease care: Isolation precautions and PPE; neonatal sepsis; sepsis workup
- Work settings: Level 1 Nursery; NICU II; NICU III; NICU IV is required
- Patient populations: Neonates under 24-28 weeks are required; neonates over 34 weeks; neonates 29-34 weeks
