Responsibilities
- Provide direct neonatal nursing care for NICU patients, including care for neonates in the < 24–28 weeks, 29–34 weeks, and > 34 weeks ranges
- Support developmental care and therapeutic interventions in the NICU environment
- Assist with patient/family teaching and provide education as part of the care plan
- Perform and manage IV therapy, including starting and maintaining IVs
- Administer and manage blood & blood products
- Manage arterial lines and assist with central line blood draws
- Provide central line/implanted line care
- Maintain and care for UAC (Umbilical Artery Catheter) and UVC (Umbilical Vein Catheter)
- Prepare and administer neonatal emergency and medication therapy, including anti-seizure medications, antibiotics/antivirals, and IV vasopressors
- Perform neonatal dosage calculations
- Support administration and monitoring of steroids, surfactants, and other prescribed therapies
- Assist with neurologic care needs including lumbar puncture support
- Provide care related to Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, seizure disorders, and therapeutic hypothermia (cooling blanket)
- Support endocrine/metabolic care including blood glucose monitoring, hyperbilirubinemia management, and phototherapy
- Support GI care including breastfeeding support/handling expressed breast milk, feedings (bottle, breast, gavage), and post-abdominal surgery needs
- Manage GI conditions such as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)
- Provide management/care for colostomy/ileostomy when applicable
- Place/manage oral, nasogastric, and nasojejunal tubes
- Support respiratory therapies including bubble CPAP, HFNC (high-flow nasal cannula), high-frequency ventilation, and ventilator management (AC/PC/SIMV/CPAP/BIPAP/PEEP)
- Assist with management of chest tubes and care related to meconium aspiration
- Provide care for therapies such as Nitric Oxide (INo) and oscillators
- Perform suctioning (ETT, NT) as ordered and provide oxygen delivery support
- Support tracheostomy care/management and ongoing airway monitoring
- Interpret and support cardiovascular needs including dysrhythmia interpretation/management, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, and pre-cardiac surgery care
- Monitor and respond to telemetry on the unit
- Support infectious disease care including isolation precautions/PPE, neonatal sepsis, and sepsis work up
- Use Epic charting processes to document care accurately
- Maintain readiness for phlebotomy tasks as applicable to the unit workflow
- Practice thermoregulation and support patient stability through NICU care processes

- Certifications: BLS, NRP

- Ability to support IV therapy including administration of blood & blood products
