Responsibilities
Provide safe, compassionate nursing care across the labor, delivery, postpartum, and newborn care continuum. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary care team, monitor patient and newborn status, provide education to patients and families, document care accurately, and respond appropriately to changing clinical needs.
Requirements
- Certifications: ACLS; AWHONN Advanced (required); AWHONN Intermediate; BLS; NRP
- IV therapy and phlebotomy: administration of blood and blood products; drawing venous blood (required); starting and maintaining IVs; use of infusion pumps, drips, and IV monitoring
- Labor and Delivery management: amnioinfusion (required); assisting with high-risk delivery (required); assisting with vaginal delivery; forceps/vacuum extraction; hemorrhage/shock; sterile vaginal examination
- Medication administration: antihypertensives; insulin drips (required); magnesium sulfate therapy; Pitocin (oxytocin); prostaglandins; terbutaline
- Neonatal care in the delivery room: APGAR scores; Baby Nurse or “Baby Catcher” (required); ID/security banding; radiant warmers and thermoregulation
- Newborn care: assisting with circumcision and assessing the site postoperatively (required); car seat education (required); cord care; discharge teaching to parents; infant identification; metabolic screen (required); neonatal abstinence syndrome; newborn assessment; newborn hypoglycemia; phototherapy (required); teaching circumcision care to parents; thermoregulation
- Postpartum care and procedures: breastfeeding and lactation support; Foley catheter insertion and management; fundus, lochia, and perineum care; wound assessment and care
- Postpartum care for patients with cesarean section, couplet care, multiple births (required), postpartum hemorrhage, pregnancy-induced hypertension, and vaginal delivery
- Pain management: epidural anesthesia; pain assessment and management
- Professional skills: isolation precautions and PPE; vaccine administration
- Fetal monitoring: recognition and treatment of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns; use of external fetal monitoring; use of internal fetal monitoring (required); IUPC placement and calibration (required)
- Antepartum care: triage of obstetrical patients
