Responsibilities
- Provide care in antepartum, high-risk antepartum, Labor and Delivery, LDRP, and Mother/Baby settings, including environments with approximately 200–300 births per month.
- Perform IV therapy and phlebotomy, including administration of blood and blood products, drawing venous blood, and starting and maintaining IVs.
- Manage labor and delivery, including amnioinfusion, assisting with high-risk and vaginal deliveries, circulating for C-sections, forceps/vacuum extraction, hemorrhage and shock care, C-section recovery, and sterile vaginal exams.
- Administer and monitor antihypertensives, insulin drips, magnesium sulfate therapy, Pitocin (oxytocin), and terbutaline.
- Support neonatal care in the delivery room, including APGAR scores, serving as the baby nurse or “baby catcher,” collecting cord samples, ID/security banding, neonatal resuscitation, and radiant warmers/thermoregulation.
- Provide newborn care, including assisting with circumcision and assessing the site post-op, cord care, discharge teaching to parents, neonatal abstinence syndrome care, newborn assessment, newborn hypoglycemia care, phototherapy, and thermoregulation.
- Perform antepartum care and procedures, including assisting with sterile speculum exams for effacement, dilation, station, and presentation; NSTs (non-stress tests); reflex checks, edema assessment, and clonus assessment; sterile vaginal exams; and use of EFM (external fetal heart monitoring).
- Care for postpartum patients with bladder distension, cesarean section recovery needs, couplet care, multiple births, postpartum hemorrhage, pregnancy-induced hypertension, and vaginal delivery recovery.
- Provide postpartum care and procedures, including breastfeeding and lactation support, Foley catheter insertion and management, fundus/lochia/perineum care, and use of an electric or manual breast pump.
- Support pain management involving epidural anesthesia, general anesthesia, nitrous oxide, and pain assessment and management.
- Care for patients with HELLP syndrome, multiple gestation, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, premature rupture of membranes, preterm labor, and VBAC management or trial of labor.
- Apply isolation precautions and PPE and administer vaccines.
- Recognize and treat abnormal fetal heart rate patterns and use external and internal fetal monitoring.
Requirements
- Follow AWHONN Standards.
- Current ACLS, AWHONN Advanced certification, AWHONN Intermediate certification, BLS, NRP, and Relias Fetal Monitoring or AWHONN certification.
