Position Details

Responsibilities

Provide comprehensive nursing care across labor, delivery, postpartum, antepartum, and newborn care settings while supporting safe outcomes for patients and families. Follow AWHONN Standards, collaborate with the care team, document accurately, and provide compassionate education throughout the patient journey.

Requirements

Certifications and clinical standards:

• ACLS
• AWHONN Advanced certification (required)
• AWHONN Intermediate certification
• BLS
• NRP
• Relias Fetal Monitoring or AWHONN fetal monitoring certification
• Follow AWHONN Standards
• Epic charting experience

IV therapy and phlebotomy:

• Administration of blood and blood products
• Drawing venous blood (required)
• Starting and maintaining IVs (required)

Labor and delivery management:

• Amnioinfusion (required)
• Assist with high-risk delivery
• Assist with vaginal delivery
• Circulate for C-section (required)
• Forceps/vacuum extraction (required)
• Hemorrhage/shock management (required)
• Recover C-section patients
• Sterile vaginal examination (required)

Work settings:

• Antepartum
• High-risk antepartum
• Labor and Delivery
• LDRP
• Mother/Baby (required)
• Experience with work settings supporting approximately 200–300 births per month

Medication and administration:

• Antihypertensives
• Insulin drips (required)
• Magnesium sulfate therapy
• Pitocin (oxytocin)
• Terbutaline

Neonatal care in the delivery room:

• APGAR scores
• Baby Nurse or “Baby Catcher” responsibilities
• Collect cord samples
• ID/security banding
• Neonatal resuscitation
• Radiant warmers and thermoregulation

Newborn care:

• Assist with circumcision and assess the site post-operatively (required)
• Cord care (required)
• Discharge teaching to parents (required)
• Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome care (required)
• Newborn assessment
• Newborn hypoglycemia management (required)
• Phototherapy (required)
• Thermoregulation (required)

Antepartum care and procedures:

• Assist with sterile speculum examinations, including effacement, dilation, station, and presentation
• NST or non-stress tests
• Reflex checks, edema assessment, and clonus assessment
• Sterile vaginal examination (required)
• Use of external fetal heart monitoring

Postpartum care:

• Care for bladder distension (required)
• Cesarean section recovery
• Couplet care
• Multiple births
• Postpartum hemorrhage
• Pregnancy-induced hypertension
• Vaginal delivery
• Breastfeeding and lactation support (required)
• Foley catheter insertion and management
• Fundus, lochia, and perineum care
• Use of electric or manual breast pumps (required)

Pain management:

• Epidural anesthesia
• General anesthesia (required)
• Nitrous oxide (required)
• Pain assessment and management

Care for patients with:

• HELLP Syndrome (required)
• Multiple gestation (required)
• Pre-eclampsia/eclampsia (required)
• Premature rupture of membranes (required)
• Preterm labor (required)
• VBAC management or trial of labor (required)

Professional topics and fetal monitoring:

• Isolation precautions and PPE
• Vaccine administration (required)
• Recognition and treatment of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns
• Use of external fetal monitoring
• Use of internal fetal monitoring (required)
