Responsibilities

• Provide care for patients experiencing vaginal delivery, cesarean section, postpartum hemorrhage, pregnancy-induced hypertension, bladder distension, couplet care, and multiple births.
• Support labor and delivery management, including amnioinfusion, high-risk and vaginal deliveries, C-section circulation and recovery, forceps/vacuum extraction, hemorrhage/shock response, and sterile vaginal examinations.
• Provide antepartum care, including sterile speculum examinations, NSTs, reflex checks, edema assessment, clonus assessment, and external fetal heart monitoring.
• Recognize and treat abnormal fetal heart rate patterns and use both external and internal fetal monitoring.
• Provide IV therapy and phlebotomy, including blood and blood product administration, venous blood collection, and starting and maintaining IVs.
• Administer and monitor antihypertensives, insulin drips, magnesium sulfate therapy, Pitocin (oxytocin), and terbutaline.
• Support delivery-room neonatal care, including APGAR scoring, Baby Nurse responsibilities, cord sample collection, identification and security banding, neonatal resuscitation, radiant warmers, and thermoregulation.
• Provide newborn care, including circumcision assistance and postoperative site assessment, cord care, parent discharge teaching, neonatal abstinence syndrome care, newborn assessment, newborn hypoglycemia care, phototherapy, and thermoregulation.
• Provide postpartum care, including breastfeeding and lactation support, Foley catheter insertion and management, fundus/lochia/perineum care, and use of electric or manual breast pumps.
• Support pain management involving epidural anesthesia, general anesthesia, nitrous oxide, and pain assessment and management.
• Care for patients with HELLP syndrome, multiple gestation, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, premature rupture of membranes, preterm labor, and VBAC management or trial of labor.
• Follow isolation precautions and PPE procedures and administer vaccines as indicated.

Requirements

• Follow AWHONN Standards.
• Required certifications: ACLS, AWHONN Advanced, AWHONN Intermediate, BLS, NRP, and Relias Fetal Monitoring or AWHONN.
• Required skills include blood and blood product administration; drawing venous blood; starting and maintaining IVs; amnioinfusion; assisting with high-risk and vaginal deliveries; circulating for C-sections; forceps/vacuum extraction; hemorrhage/shock; recovering C-sections; and sterile vaginal examinations.
• Required clinical competencies include Mother/Baby care; insulin drips; circumcision assistance and postoperative site assessment; cord care; discharge teaching to parents; neonatal abstinence syndrome; newborn hypoglycemia; phototherapy; thermoregulation; bladder distension; breastfeeding/lactation support; electric or manual breast pump use; general anesthesia; nitrous oxide; HELLP syndrome; multiple gestation; pre-eclampsia/eclampsia; premature rupture of membranes; preterm labor; VBAC management or trial of labor; vaccine administration; and internal fetal monitoring.
